Week Nine

  1. Complete the final three columns of the color chart matrix (the entire 12 columns should be completed by Week Ten.
  2. Continue working on Master Copy. The master copy is due week eleven (but it should be really good by week 11).
  3. Four (4) Color Key studies from Feature animation. Please use 2-D animation screenshots and these should be approximately 5 x 8". 4. For week Ten, we will be working from the costumed model. Please bring a 16 x 20" canvas along with all painting materials.

Week Eight

  1. Complete the next four columns of the color chart matrix (the first nine columns should be completed by (Week Nine).
  2. Continue working on Master Copy
  3. Four (4) Color Key studies from Feature animation. Please use 2-D animation screenshots and these should be approximately 5 x 8". Limit your working time to 45 minutes once you have established your sketch. Publish your Color Key along with its corresponding reference image on the blog. The Screen Caps website, along with recommended films, are posted in the Class Notes.
  4. For week Nine, we will be working in groups from still lifes in class. Please bring five colorful items that you would like to contribute to your group's still life. It is probably best to bring simple items, that are not too complicated.

Week Seven

  1. We will begin working on the hue/value matrix of the color chart. Complete the first five columns beginning with Cyan and working towards Magenta. The values of each step, for every single hue, should match the value scale with the exception of value 10 (white). This entire row will be slightly darker than value ten in order to see the hue. Please ensure that every hue step (movement from column to column) is equal.
  2. If you have been approved for your master copy, print your reference image and begin the copy on a 16 x 20" canvas.

For week eight, next week, you will need all painting materials, all colors, and a 16 x 20" white canvas.

Week Six

  1. Choose a "Master Painting" to copy from the Google Art Project:   https://artsandculture.google.com/?hl=en   It is recommended to also plan for a backup choice. Your choices should be based on your taste as well as your capabilities. Your master copy will be 16 x 20" and you will be painting your copy actual size (in other words if your chosen painting is larger than 16  x 20" you will be painting a detail of the original).  Please choose a painting with a reference that can be printed 16 x 20" without any pixelation; all students will be working from high-quality printed images. The instructor's approval of your painting is required before you may proceed. This master copy will be due in week ten.
  2. You are Ted Turner: Colorize your John Singer Sargent James Whitcomb Riley or Rembrandt Johannes Wtenbogaert head study with today's Zorn Palette. (Do you know who Ted Turner is?)
  3. Copy one of the Anders Zorn or John Singer Sargent Painting listed under today's class notes (12 x 16")
  4. Prepare for the color chart next week by drawing the matrix on a 16 x 20" canvas or panel. An 11-step value scale should be added to the far left column.  A template for the color chart is below and each square should be 1 inch by 1 inch. (increase the scale 100%).

In next week's class, we will devote ourselves entirely to beginning the color chart. Please have all required pigments, a good palette, and proper palette knives for mixing next week.

Week Five

1.   Two studies from John Singer Sargent in cool/warm palette, see images below (roughly, 9 x 12”)
2.   Create one original cool/warm painting from life (landscape, still life, model workshop, etc.) utilizing this week's palette (about 12 x 16"). This should be a more "finished" image when completed. Please post the reference along with your painting.

For next week's class you will need one plain (no imprimatura) 16 x 20" canvas; Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Ivory Black, and Titanium White oil paint; and all other painting supplies.

Above is John Singer Sargent's Oyster Gatherers at Cancale and below is a cool warm study from this painting in Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. Please note that I am working with a gradient of these two pigments and utilizing mixtures (neutrals) between the pure pigments.

Below are the seven additional works by Sargent

Week Four

  • One (1 ) three-value monochrome painting from life. I would suggest a still life or go to the painting workshop (12 x 16"). This painting should be highly developed.
  • Rework one of the images from today's lecture in the three different Major Keys and select a different Minor Key for each study. In other words, there should be three paintings (either gouache or oils) and one representing a high key, the second a medium key, and the third a low key (applying a different contrast range in each). These studies should be approximately 4 x 6" in gouache and 6 x 8" in oils. Please label each study and post your reference image. Below is a sample from Coraline in all nine possible combinations.
  • Take one of the images from today's discussion on Hierarchy and rework it to clarify the read. This may also be in gouache or oils. Again, these studies should be approximately 4 x 6" in gouache or 6 x 8" in oils. Please label each study and post your reference image
  • For next week you will need two canvases (12 x 16") with an imprimatura, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Titanium White, oil paint, and all other supplies.

Week Three

  • Paint one (1) full-value still life from life (12 x 16"). Begin with a three-value break-down and then develop the painting into a full-value painting. Please photograph your reference and your painting at the three-value stage. Post images of these, in addition to the finished painting, on the blog. Please bring your painting to class next week.
  • Paint one (1) full-value monochrome of an interior, from where you live, on a 12 x 16" canvas with an imprimatura. After completing the painting, (not before, you should be working from life), photograph your subject and post your subject and painting on the blog. Bring your interior to class next week.
  • Prepare one canvas (12 x 16" to 16 x 20") with an imprimatura for class next week. We will have a model with one pose.

Week Two

  1. Prepare one canvases with an imprimatura (12 x 16"). The imprimatura should be made in advance and dry when brought to class.
  2. Refine your 11-value scale.
  3. Three (3), five-value monochrome studies. These should be 11 x 14". One of the studies should be the detail of the portrait of Johannes Wtenbogaert by Rembrandt. This is the portrait listed as Demonstration One in today's class notes and a high-resolution image may be found through the Google Arts and Cultural project: https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/portrait-of-johannes-wtenbogaert-rembrandt-harmensz-van-rijn/OAGi5DuRI07nxg Another will be a monochrome head study of John Sing Sargent's Portrait of James Whitcomb Riley on a 11" x 14" canvas using the reference image at the Google Art Project. This will be a detail of the head painted roughly life-size. Post to the blog and bring your painting to class next week. 4. Five (5) 3-value film studies from black and white film stills. Please post  all five studies, along with corresponding reference images.

Week One

  1. Create an 11-step value scale utilizing one-inch squares, in oils on a piece of canvas. Each step or interval should be equal and if you have an excellent 11-step value scale from Design 1, copy it carefully. Please see the demonstration video.
  2. Create an edge chart as discussed, in the class notes, and post.
  3. Prepare two canvases with an imprimatura (11 x 14" or 12 x 16"). In addition to these two canvases, you will need to prepare three (11 x 14") and five (12 x 16")  canvases with an imprimatura. This will be sufficient for our work over the next four weeks.
  4. Ten (10) 3-value film studies from black and white film stills. Please post your best five studies, along with corresponding reference images.
